Outdoor Stairs and Walkways
We build outdoor stairs for the entrance, slopes and the cottage shore, and boardwalks and walkways over wetlands or streams. The steps are sized evenly and the railings are sturdy, so the stairs are safe to use in wet and slippery weather too. Old rotten stairs are removed and taken away at the same time.
We build stairs and walkways in Vihti and Lohja, and for cottages in Inkoo and Sipoo.

What we build
Below are the most common jobs. If your site is difficult, for example a steep slope, bedrock or the waterline, tell us right away. Those are exactly the places where ordinary equipment isn't always enough.

-
New wooden stairs for the front door, porch or terrace. The steps are sized so the rise is even and you don't trip, and there's a handrail on both sides.

What affects the price
What determines the price
These factors affect the price the most.
The higher the rise, the more steps, frame and railing.
A steep slope, bedrock and the waterline need special foundations and slow the work down. In practice they can double the price.
If the materials have to be carried by hand up a slope or to the shore, the work takes longer.
A railing on both sides and landings add material and work.
Rotten stairs are removed and taken away at the same time.
This estimate isn't a quote. You'll get a fixed price after a site visit.
04 / Before you start
Stairs you won't trip on
The sizing, railing and surface decide whether the stairs are safe when wet and icy too.
-
Sizing the steps
On outdoor stairs, the steps have to be lower and deeper than on indoor stairs, because a wet and icy step is slippery. We base the sizing on the Finnish decree on the safety of use of buildings: on uncovered outdoor stairs, the rise is at most 13 cm and the going at least 39 cm. The most important thing is that all the steps are the same size, because even one different step makes people trip.
-
Railing and handrail
A railing is needed when the drop is more than 50 cm. On stairs, it's worth having a handrail on both sides, and it's especially important if older people or children use the stairs. If children can get to the stairs, the gaps in the railing must not be too wide.
-
Permit
Stairs and boardwalks in the yard and at the cottage usually don't need a permit. A bridge over a stream or other body of water can need a permit or a notification under the Water Act (vesilaki), and building on the shore can need the consent of the owner of the water area. Check your own situation with your municipality's building control. We help you find out what your project needs.
-
Winter and slipperiness
Wooden stairs get slippery when wet and icy. Anti-slip grooves, a rough surface or anti-slip strips make the stairs safer all year round. We agree on the solution at the site visit.

-
Call or photos
Tell us what kind of stairs or bridge you need and how big the height difference is. Photos of the terrain make the estimate quicker.
-
Free site visit
We come to the site, measure the height difference and assess the terrain. You get a fixed price in writing within 1–3 days.
-
Building
The same person is on site from start to finish. The schedule is agreed in advance. If something unexpected shows up during demolition, any changes are always agreed before they're made.

Handover
We go through the stairs together, clean up after ourselves and give you care instructions.
How much do outdoor stairs cost? + −
Wooden entrance stairs with handrails usually cost about €800–1,600, and slope stairs with railings about €2,000–5,000. The price depends on the height difference, the terrain and the railings. You get a fixed price after a free site visit.
How long does it take to build stairs? + −
Entrance stairs are usually done in 1–2 days. Slope stairs and walkways typically take 2–5 days, depending on the terrain.
Do stairs need a railing? + −
Yes, when the drop is more than 50 cm. It's worth having a handrail on both sides even if the height is lower.
Does a bridge or boardwalk need a permit? + −
Boardwalks and bridges in the yard usually don't need a permit. A bridge over a stream or body of water can need a permit or a notification, so we check this with you before the work.
Can old stairs be repaired, or do they need replacing? + −
If the frame is in good condition, replacing the steps and railings is often enough. If the frame is rotten or the stairs have sunk, new stairs work out cheaper in the long run.
Can I get the household deduction for stairs? + −
Yes, for the labor portion, when the work is done at your own home or holiday home. We show the labor portion separately on the invoice.
What area do you serve? + −
Espoo, Kauniainen, Kirkkonummi, Vihti, Lohja, Nurmijärvi, Sipoo and Inkoo. We also travel further to cottage and shore sites, and travel costs are always agreed in advance.
